Introduction

Cookies bring people together more than any other sweet treat. Maybe it’s the communal nature of the platter, but when a plate of homemade cookies appears, people gather in an excited frenzy. Cookies have that power.

The beauty of homemade cookies is that they are not difficult to make. This book is filled with delicious, doable recipes fit for home cooks of all skill levels. Whether you like chocolate or citrus, nuts or dried fruit (or maybe all of that in one cookie), you’ll find a recipe to suit your fancy. Nuts and cookies are natural partners, but they can be omitted from most recipes with good results. You won’t need exotic equipment to succeed, and nearly all ingredients are readily available in grocery stores across the country. Homemade is good, frustration is not. If you’re anything like me, finding time to make cookies can be rough. That’s why I’ve noted the “freezeworthiness” of each recipe. I like to bake ahead when I have time and I suspect the same is true for you.

The majority of the recipes in “Cookielicious!” came from the recipe boxes and Web stashes of Tampa Bay Times’ readers. They are their favorite recipes and over the years have become some of mine, too. I have tinkered with a few and renamed others to better describe the goodness that awaits. I’ve tasted every single one and can vouch for their wow-factor. All you need to do is the pick the ones that speak to you. I suspect there will be many.

In the decade since I started the annual cookie project, I have received about 5,000 recipes via e-mail and snail mail, many of those painstakingly written by hand. That’s certainly a testament to our love affair with the cookie. The passion of home cooks has helped me inspire a new generation of bakers.

We all share the cookielicious joy of homemade recipes. Now, to the kitchen!
